You can use the ferries during your vacation to shorten your hiking trips to the other Main shore, in addition it is fun as well. There are four places within 10kilometers along the river where you can hop on a ferry. Let’s start with the ferry between Nordheim and Escherndorf, it operates seven days a week. During the passage there are beautiful views of the old river main with the surrounding nature reserve and above Escherndorf ,famous for the steep slope Escherndorfer Lump, the fortress Vogelsburg. Nordheim is the largest wine-growing community in Franconia.
Four of twelve ferries in total are located at the Mainschleife. The most ancient one, first mentioned in the year 1400, connects the villages Fahr and Untereisenheim. It is called Schorsch like its long time ferryman. Next step is Obereisenheim the birthplace of Franconian Silvaner. Reaching the shore of Stammheim you can see the huge Bocksbeutel in the vineyard – the largest oft he world! Also worth a visit is the museum for military and contemporary history with the largest private collection of this kind. The ferry Obereisenheim is the last active motor ferry in the district of Würzburg
The largest car ferry starts in Wipfeld. The Literaturhaus Wipfeld (house of Literature) as a former bathing house it is famous for it’s painted walls. On the other side of the shore there is the ancient monastery St.Ludwig , base of the Bendetiktinerabtei Münsterschwarzach. You will continue your hike homewards with lots of impressions.
